They stood on the terrace, watching the sunset. The orange-red sky, the cool breeze, and the birds soaring in the sky made the moment breathtaking.
“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” she asked.
“Yes, it is. I feel at peace,” he responded gently.
“Watching the sunset with you feels surreal,” she chuckled.
“But life won’t always be this simple,” he said.
“It will, with you by my side,” she whispered.
Though too young to grasp the depth of their words, there was an unspoken promise between them.
Anahita snapped out of the memory, a wistful smile playing on her lips. They had promised to be together, but destiny had other plans. Arjun, her best friend, had been more than just that—neighbor, classmate, and family.
“Arjun, you’re leaving. Promise me you won’t forget me,” she had pleaded.
“I won’t. You are my best friend,” Arjun assured.
“I’ll wait for you,” she said as he waved goodbye.
“I’ll always come back to you,” he had promised.
Now, twenty years later, Anahita smiled at the memory. Arjun had moved to Bangalore with his family, while she remained in Delhi. Though life had moved on, a part of her still waited. Lost in thought, she barely noticed Mishti’s arrival.
“You’re still thinking about Arjun?” Mishti asked.
“He’s always in my thoughts,” Anahita admitted.
Mishti smiled knowingly. “You always get this wistful look when you think of him.”
Anahita chuckled. “Life took us in different directions, but I know he’ll be back.”
“I hope so, but honestly he doesn’t define you,” Mishti said warmly.
“I might not define her, but she’s an integral part of my life,” a voice interrupted.
They turned to see a tall and handsome man with a chiselled jawline, his eyes warm with familiarity.
“Arjun Shekhawat, right?” Anahita asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
He chuckled. “You recognised me, you’re the best. And I see you kept your word—you waited for me.”
“I said I’d wait for a lifetime,” she replied softly.
Mishti smiled and quietly stepped away, giving them space. Anahita hugged Arjun, emotions overwhelming her.
Later, they headed onto the terrace where their friendship began. They stood there watching the sunset.
“The sunset feels even more surreal with you by my side,” Arjun said, clinging closer to her.
“All the distances and differences seem to have faded, Arjun. Life took us on separate paths, but we’ve found our way back,” Anahita said, squeezing his hand.
“I told you I’d come back—forever,” he whispered, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead.
She smiled as he pulled her closer, the sunset casting a golden glow over them. For them, this was more than a reunion—it was the start of a new chapter.
