It had been a week since we had been placed on front rack. With all those flashlights we were supposed to be showstoppers, but only few people had thrown uninterested glances at us. Then she came, high heels, beautifully made up face. She was talking to our master and he pointed towards us. First time she saw us with her big brown eyes and fell in love instantly. As she tried us on her soft feet, we realized her knees were giving problem, so her doctor had suggested she shun those heels for longer knee life. Someone will take us home, one steady master, oh no, a mistress till we retire. But why think of retirement , our life was about to begin. Now was the time to show our worth, commitment and grit.
We were about to begin our exciting journey. Our dream of becoming most useful accessory was being fulfilled. Our reverie was broken as alarm rang, it was 5 AM, she was up, in a jiffy she was ready and tying our laces. It was dark when we started running on the road and then in the park. Forty minutes of running and jogging. We were elated as well as exhausted. Then back home , in the kitchen. Tiffins , coffee, lunch, breakfast, utensils, cutting and chopping, cooking. It seemed endless, sheer madness. Her laugh echoed in the home. She was happy, singing along with her work. We lost count of chores she did. Cleaning, dusting, washing, from this room to that and from that room to this, she seemed to be sprinting. Leaving the kids at bus stop then getting them back , then to buy groceries and endless other things she did. We were her constant companions . We felt useful. But now we needed rest, it was almost eleven when she finally took us off. First day had been fun but we were tired, we were not used to doing so much work, after all we were just a pair of new shoes.
We were still trying to relax as we talked to each other about our day when the alarm rang again. This time we shuddered. Not again!

We have been with her day in and day out, watched her closely and every day we wanted to salute her. She is not at the border , we know, but at home front she is no less than a soldier, ready 24*7, 365 days a year.
It has been two years, almost 730 days, we are still with her, same routine everyday. We are worn out, will be shunted soon. Going to miss this funny and amazing mistress who can do anything , anytime. She can do two or more jobs at a time , even cry and laugh at same time. Her heart is full of love for her family but when she screams and scolds her kids even devil dare not enter the home. Wherever we may go from here we will always love her and miss her spirit. |
