It was a lazy Sunday noon. But Darshana was feeling fresh and active. She decided to go for driving practice.
As she entered her favourite driving lane, she was happy to find it empty. Everyone is enjoying Sunday afternoon siesta! she thought.
Darshana checked the fuel, brake, wiped the mirrors clean and started to drive.
She had barely driven for a few minutes, when a woman who was standing at the side, suddenly decided to cross the road.
Darshana thought of stopping the car but unfortunately she pressed the accelerator instead and wrooom..her car sped and hit the poor lady.
Completely shaken from what just happened, Darshana got down and rushed towards the woman, fearing the worst. Her cries, her apologies fell on deaf ears. The woman was not responding!
A big crowd gathered. Ignoring their abuses and the live videos, Darshana begged them to call an ambulance.
A few kind souls helped. The ambulance came. An alert bystander thrust the woman’s bag in Darshana’s hand.
The hospital staff were ready. The injured woman was wheeled straightaway to the emergency ward.
“God please save her”. Darshana prayed. “I will never drive again. Please save her!”
After some time, Darshana was informed that the woman had regained consciousness and that she was under observation.
Thanking God, Darshana took out the mobile from the woman’s bag to inform her family.
She nervously dialled the first contact. It was saved as ‘My son’.
As soon as she heard the ‘Hello’ from the receiver, Darshana spoke nonstop like a dam had just burst open!
“Sorry Sir! Please forgive me sir! I committed a big mistake!”, she said admist tears.
“Hello! Wait! Who is this?”, said the receiver.
“Sir! Please forgive me! By mistake I pressed the accelerator and the accident happened, your mother got injured. She is out of danger now…Darshana went on.
Hello! What kind of a joke is this!! Pathetic! My mother is hale and hearty and right here!
Sir Sir! Not joke sir! Darshana continued. It was mentioned ‘son’ so I contacted you Sir! I am at Jupiter hospital Thane..
Beeep beeep …the line was cut.
A few minutes later..
“Hello Darshana”, a person called out to her. Darshana looked up.
“Yes! How is Madam?”
“She is doing better. She wants to see you.”
“Thank you! Thank God!”
Before she could say anything more, he said,
“I am Dr Ashok! You had contacted me.”
“But I had called her son!” Darshana was confused.
“Correct! After your call, I thought about it. I also work in Jupiter and wanted to confirm if this was someone I know.
On reaching here, the confusion got cleared.
Shobha ma’am is my patient. She often said, you are like my son.
But I didn’t know that she had even saved my contact thus.” he smiled.
“All is well that ends well.”
Dr Ashok took out his mobile and showed his updated contact list.
Shobha ma’am (Mom)
Come let’s meet my Mom.
Darshana also smiled.
